Frequently Asked Questions:

How do I get an allotment?

There are a number of allotment sites across Portsmouth, each with a waiting list. Currently for the Eastney and Milton Allotments it's between 5 and 6 years. To register interest and find out more please go to the Portsmouth City Council website.

How do I become a member of the Allotment Association?

  • Annual renewals are taken in late January each year at the polytunnel.
  • Benefits of joining the association are:
    • Use of the onsite shop and it's discounted rates.
    • Use of the onsite toilets.
    • Organised events and social functions.
    • Association membership of the National Society of Allotment Holders and Leisure Gardeners (NSALG).
    • Association membership of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).
    • Insurance to ensure we are able to provide a shop onsite.
    • Third party insurance.
    • We also publish a regular newsletter which we email to all members, with some hard copies available to all plotholders on a first come first served basis.

Are there any rules about what we can and can't do on our plot?

Yes - these are published by Portsmouth City Council and can be found here. PCC Allotment Rules pdf.

Can we receive deliveries onsite and if so, what's the postcode?

Plot holders will need to wait in the car park for deliveries because the gates should always be locked to ensure the site is secure. Please be aware that many plots have very narrow access which will make it impossible for lorries/vans to deliver to.
The entrance to the main car park is on Locksway Road. The postcode is PO4 8LF.
The entrance for Hope Cottage is in Meryl Road. The postcode is PO4 8LA.
These postcodes can also be used in case of an emergency and an ambulance is needed.

Are there toilets onsite?

Yes - these can be found at the end of the tarmac path running east from the shop towards Langstone Harbour. They are kept locked but the key used to open the gates will open the toilets. Please ensure the toilets are kept clean and locked again afterwards.

Are dogs allowed onsite?

Yes, but they must be kept on a lead at all times to ensure they do not damage other people's plots. Owners must ensure they pick up any dog mess.

Who do I contact in case of vandalism or theft?

In all cases, please contact the Portsmouth Police on 0845 045 4545.

Please also let a member of the committee know, or leave a message at the shop, so we can monitor the situation with Portsmouth City Council. Thanks.
