Fire and smoke damage - November 2024

As I am sure you are all aware, in November 2024, there was a fire at the allotment shop causing significant smoke and fire damage. This meant that the shop could no longer be used until the damage had been properly assessed and the required repairs and
redecoration was carried out.
The shop as always was closed during December and January so any inconvenience was kept to a minimum.
With the shop due to open again at the end of January 2025, stock, fittings and other items were moved into the poly
tunnel to allow the shop to continue trading, thanks to all of the people who volunteered at this time.
Various working parties were organised by committee member Bill Chatband when Committee Members and volunteers carried out the often dirty and unpleasant task of clearing the shop of debris, cleaning and repainting of the shop shelving and fittings. Thank you to all of the volunteers involved.
Helen Bodkin committee chair person spent many hours in consultation with Steve Udden the PCC allotments officer and
other council officials to progress the repairs and redecoration of the shop.
In April 2025 Mountjoy, PCCs contractor attended the site, cleaned and repainted the shop interior and repairs were made
to the damaged window. A further working party will be arranged for volunteers to paint the exterior of the building.
Next steps will be to relocate the shop fittings, repainted staging and stock back into the shop, more opportunities for
volunteers to get involved, thanks in advance.
After much work from volunteers assembling racking and restocking products, the shop reopened in May 2025. Hopefully you will agree that it is now a much brighter and welcoming place to visit.
